Serpent 1
This frieze shows a serpent with jaws opened to reveal its tongue. The serpent symbolizes Satan or evil and is here shown amongst vine leaves and grapes symbolizing Christ. The panel is obviously a reference to the conflict between good and evil.
The red paint is original to the carving which is of pitch pine and probably Scandinavian.
