| Full Description: | The Hunting Book by Gaston Phoebus. Text by Gabriel Bise after Gaston Phoebus, translated by J Peter Tallon. c.1984 hardback; 104 pages, illustrated throughout in colour. Condition: very good and clean throughout, with very good dust jacket. Gaston lived in the 14th century in south west France where he was the count of Foix, having estates in Orthez. He spent a lot of time away fighting for his King or country, saying that his main interests were weapons, love and hunting. He wrote this guide to hunting late on in his life when he had given up on weapons and love. There are some 37 manuscripts of The Hunting Book still in existence; this one uses 15th-century miniatures as illustrations, the original manuscript being in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. The book deals with wild and tame beasts, dogs and their training, the ways to train huntsmen, the secrets of coursing and weapons and devices used by poachers to kill game on the Count's lands. This book is 11" tall; each page has large colour illustrations with a short piece of relevant text : how to teach a groom to recognize the stag by its footprints; how to keep kennels clean; notes on the spaniel; sickness in dogs. A beautiful and fascinating book. |
